Iqaluit’s schools and soup kitchen get an unexpected but welcome boost from Baffin Fisheries, which distributed $16,000 in cheques during a short ceremony at the Amarok Hunters and Trappers Association offices in Iqaluit March 30. The Baffin Fisheries vice president and vice chair, Methusalah Kunuk, said the company’s growing profits allowed it to donate more money to community organizations this year. “We’re really proud,” he said. The Apex District Education Authority received $2,000, while the Iqaluit District Education Authority—which oversees four local schools— received $10,000. “It’s really going to help,” said the IDEA chair, Doug Workman. “It wasn’t expected, but it’ll help.” Iqaluit’s soup kitchen also received a donation of $4,000.
