Photo: Spring cleaning time in Iqaluit

Volunteers wandered through Iqaluit on the morning of June 28 to gather up mounds of accumulated trash. Organized by the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment, the clean-up effort ran from 9 a.m. to noon. GN health department employees were assigned to clean up the area around the lower part of the Kuugalaaq, the little creek that empties near the breakwater. “It’s pretty difficult. This area collects a lot of garbage,” said health employee Lynn Matte. “We’ve seen strollers, bicycles, broken hockey sticks — and then the usual cigarette butts, pop cans, coffee cups.” Matte’s co-workers Michelle Issaluk (in the green promotional T-shirt) and Linnea Ingebrigtson (in the red jacket) picked up garbage in the creek. “We did this last year too, so we knew what to expect,” Matte said.
