Photo: Spring weather means easier carving outdoors

Lyta Josephie of Iqaluit pauses to look at the soapstone beluga he’s carving at his home near the Iqaluit cemetery June 6. What began about an hour ago will be a finished product in another three, he said. Carvers can ply their craft with a little more ease now as temperatures begin to climb above zero, pulling children onto the streets on bikes and dotting the ice in Frobisher Bay with pale blue puddles. It was 3 C in Iqaluit June 6 with highs forecast at 7 C and 8 C toward the end of the week. Expect similar temperatures in Cambridge Bay and Rankin Inlet, where people will see a little snow or rain at the beginning of the week and then sunshine and warm temperatures from June 10 onward.
