Photo: Stayin alive: students reviving Inuinnaqtun language

Jessie Lyall, language instructor, crouches in front of five students who just completed the Pirurvik Centre’s Ablurvik Inuinnaqtun Level 2 course in Cambridge Bay. During the course, students learned to use the western Nunavut language to talk about events in the past and future, to tell time and also how to express possession and the location of objects. In 2012, as few as 77 spoke the language in Cambridge Bay, the Kitikmeot hub that is home to about 1,600 people.
