Curators at the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa are well into unpacking hundreds of artifacts ahead of the museum’s upcoming exhibit “Death in the Ice: The Mystery of the Franklin Expedition,” showcasing many of the new relics recovered from HMS Erebus when it was discovered in 2014—such as the above-pictured fragment of the ship’s wheel. The exhibit also marks the Canadian debut of Franklin relics recovered in the 19th century that have remained in England since that time. Following the exhibition’s initial run at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, in southeast London, during 2017, the Canadian Museum of History will host the relics from March 2 until Sept. 30. Stay tuned for a preview of the exhibition next month on nunatsiaqonline.ca.
