Photo: Stonecarvers meet in Arviat

A piece of stone begins to take shape as Jerry Ell works on it during a stone carving symposium organized by the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association in Arviat. During the symposium, which started Nov. 24, carvers from the Kivalliq region are learning to carve in granite. Some like Salomonie Pootoogook have been carving for 20 years. But it’s his first time carving in granite, and he says he feels like a beginner because the stone is so different and much harder to shape.
