Photo: Stray dogs remain a problem in Iqaluit

A dog, who some recognize as “Buddy,” creates havoc in downtown Iqaluit during the afternoon of Aug. 23. Gabriel Blarnde, a cab driver in Iqaluit for nine years, said the stray dog problem is the same every year. “When I see a problem with the dog, I stop everything, I call the RCMP.” Two RCMP trucks and two Iqaluit bylaw enforcement trucks showed up within minutes, and took the dog away peacefully. Blarnde said after weekends, when Iqaluit bylaw aren’t on duty, the accumulation of loose dogs creates stress for taxi drivers on Monday. “Sometimes I see, when on the weekend the bylaw do nothing, on Monday morning there’s almost 20 dogs around in town.” (PHOTO BY DAVID MURPHY)
