Members of the Norwegian group Maud Returns Home were in Cambridge Bay earlier this month, where divers snapped this underwater photo of the sunken Maud. The group made a visit to the community to check in on the shop’s condition, a year before it plans to transport the Maud back to Norway next summer with a tugboat and barge. “Let us hope this will be the last winter in the ice for her,” wrote Maud Returns Home project manager Jan Wanggaard on the group’s website. “The time is due.” The vessel, which sank in 1930 after polar explorer Roald Amundsen tried unsuccessfully to sail her around the North Pole, will eventually be put on display in an Oslo museum.
