The sun heads below the horizon Dec. 1 in Iqaluit, where sunset now falls shortly after two o’clock in the afternoon. Dec. 1’s high temperature was -9 C, seven degrees above the average high temperature for this date. On Dec. 1 the 2011 Arctic Report Card says the Arctic is entering a new state – one with warmer air and water temperatures, less summer sea ice and snow cover, and a changed ocean chemistry.
