Photo: Tanya Tagaq takes Iqaluit

“It’s not traditional, it’s contemporary,” Tanya Tagaq tells a crowd gathered at Inuksuk High School Oct. 1 for her first Nunavut concert in years. The long-awaited performance came close to being cancelled when a snowstorm blew through Iqaluit the night she was scheduled to appear. Luckily for fans, the sold-out show was postponed and Tagaq’s spectacular performance with violinist Jesse Zubot went ahead a day later, on Oct. 1. Iqaluit’s Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, known for her Greenlandic mask dancing, joined Tagaq on stage. Rankin Inlet artist Kathleen Merritt opened the Alianait concert and was joined by throat singer Charlotte Qamaniq. See more photos on our Facebook page. (PHOTO BY BETH BROWN)
