Photo: Team wins big at Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair

Lukasi Tukkiapik and Jeremy Davies of Kuujjuaq stand next to their exhibit on the level of mercury in brook trout, “Le taux de mercure dans l’omble de fontaine,” at the Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair, which took place this week in Kuujjuaq. The two won first prize in their category (Secondary Four and Five) as well as the health prize for their science project. Their project looked at the level of mercury in brook trout and compared it to other species like Arctic char, Atlantic Salmon and even seal and beluga, using equipment at the Nunavik Research Centre in Kuujjuaq. The pair’s project also won the Pan-Canadian prize, which means they will present their project in May at the national science fair in Alberta. They also earned a chance to visit one of Quebec’s university research centres. (PHOTO BY ISABELLE DUBOIS)
