Photo: An underwater view of the Baymaud

Here’s how the Maud, sailed by Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, looks 80 years after it sank near Cambridge Bay. Jan Wanggaard and photographer Dag Leslie Hansen from Norway’s “Maud returns home” project have been diving around the Maud to see if it’s in sturdy enough to be taken out of the water and returned to Norway by barge. More than 350 members of the Cambridge Bay group, “Keep the Baymaud in Canada,” are still fighting to keep the wreck in Canada. They’re supported by a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization policy that says underwater cultural heritage should be kept where they are whenever possible.
