Photo: The Last Shaman

On display at the Arctic Council meeting venue in Kiruna, Sweden: “The last shaman of Wrangler Island,” a photo by Anastasiya Ilina. The winning photo in the Arctic Council’s competition shows Georgiy Kaurgin, a Chukchi reindeer breeder. Ilina, an oceanographer with of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, was participating in a 45-day expedition arranged by Northern (Arctic) Federal University to Wrangler Island when she took the photo, one of 117 submitted to the Arctic Council’s photo competition.
