Nunavut rapper Brian Tagalik performs his gut-wrenching debut single, “The Struggle,” this past March 20 at the Bronson Centre Theatre in Ottawa during Tungasuvvingat Inuit’s 2015 spring equinox celebration. “Suicide has gone and taken all the friends I had and you’re standing there like you fuckin’ ain’t heard shit,” Tagalik says in the final verse. “Four hundred and thirty-six deaths is too many,” he said, reciting the number printed on his tee shirt, which represents the number of Nunavummiut who have died by suicide. Tagalik released “The Struggle,” which looks at life through the eyes of Tagalik, his father and his grandfather, in September 2013. Since then, it’s become a Nunavut classic. (PHOTO BY JIM BELL)
