Photo: To the beat of their own drums

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

On May 28 and May 29 and June 1 and June 2, two Grade 9 classes at Killinik High School in Cambridge Bay learned how to make traditional Inuit drums. Elders Jimmy Maniyogena and Jimmy Okhila taught the teenagers the step-by-step, hands-on process. Each student learned how to make the qilaut (drum) as well as the katuk (beater.) The idea for the workshop came from Kelli Hanson, a Grade 9 teacher, who organized it along with teacher Dawn Doyle. The drums were made as part of the students’ Art and CPP courses (Career Planning Program.) (WORDS BY SEBASTIAN MALONE-HOGALUK; PHOTO BY TYLER AGLIGOETOK)
