Photo: Traditional tattoos film screening draws crowd in Iqaluit

Alethea Arnaquq-Baril answers questions from Iqaluit audience members Jan. 7 after the Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre’s screening of her film “Tunniit: Retracing the Lines of Inuit Tattoos.” The 50-minute film, released in 2010, follows Arnaquq-Baril’s quest to research and connect with the traditional Inuit practice of tattooing, practiced in varying forms across Nunavut. The film ends with an emotional Arnaquq-Baril receiving her own traditionally-styled tattoos on her forehead and wrists. About three dozen people came out for the film and post-screening question-and-answer session. The visitor’s centre shows free movies every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. You can see John Houston’s “Songs in Stone” and “Nuliajuk” on Jan. 14. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
