Photo: Tundra butchers: hunters carve up beluga near Iqaluit

Jimmy Nowdlak, centre, in camoflage jacket, pries open the rib cage of a beluga he and three friends successfully harvested on Frobisher Bay in the early morning of July 17. Nowdlak, along with Keith Oqallak, Andrew Ell and Jaypetee Peter, harpooned and then shot the mammal, before pulling it ashore to carve up. Nowdlak told Nunatsiaq News the whale charged their boat — mouth open, teeth bared — before they were able to make their kill. He said the meat and maktaaq would be shared with family, friends and elders. (PHOTO BY THOMAS ROHNER)
