Photo: We have lift-off — the Maud is rising

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Attempts to float polar explorer Roald Amundsen's sunken Maud ship off the coast of Cambridge Bay appear to be progressing well according to this overhead drone camera shot. The Maud, or Baymaud as some locals call her, sank from her moorings 85 years ago and remained there, listing and still, until a group of Norwegians, lead by Jan Wanggaard, came up with an audacious plan to lift her off the sea floor, place her on a barge, dry her out for the winter and then tug her back to Vollen, Norway to preserve as a historical monument. According to the maudreturnshome.no website, the team is well on its way to doing just that. You can follow their progress on that website or on their Facebook page. (PHOTO BY RED SUN PRODUCTIONS)
