Nunavut Sivuniksavut students carry placards at a March 15 rally, held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, to promote Inuit seal harvesting. The students at the Ottawa-based college program for Nunavut Inuit also put on a sealskin fashion show, modelling sealskin outfits provided by Nunavut's environment department. The event was a dress rehearsal for their March 16 trip to Toronto, where animal rights groups were expected to hold — but then cancelled —demonstrations to protest the harvesting of seals and other animals. The NS students still plan to hold their own parallel rally on March 16 to educate people in Toronto about the continued importance of seal harvesting for the Inuit culture and economy.
