Photo: What’s new in the Nunavut Court of Justice
A new large sign from the Office of the Sheriff in Inuktitut, Innuinaqtun, English and French — along with international picture symbols — hangs prominently in the entrance to the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit. It says that “the carrying of knives and weapons is strictly prohibited,” “all persons entering the Nunavut Court of Justice may be subject to physical/electronic search of their person and/or belongings,” “the use of electronic devices capable of capturing video, audio or picture in any courtroom is strictly prohibited,” and “young children, toddlers and infants are not permitted in the courtroom.” The posting of the new sign closely follows the adjournment of a preliminary hearing into a manslaughter charge on two different occasions by two Nunavut court judges over their concerns about lack of security in the courtroom.
