An SSI Micro technician monitors the flow of internet traffic on Nunavut’s Qiniq network inside “the pit,” a cavernous room at the company’s satellite teleport in Kanata, Ont. On July 14, the company filed a big submission with the CRTC called “The Qimirluk Proposal: An Open Gateway to Deliver the Promise of Broadband.” Under the theme “broadband is the new basic,” they argue that broadband has replaced wireline voice phone as the must-have service demanded by all Canadian consumers and businesses.
