Like ghosts against a snowy tundra, willow ptarmigan take flight about nine kilometres northwest of Rankin Inlet Dec. 16. The willow ptarmigan is the only member of the grouse family in which the male is involved in raising the babies. “Pairs remain together from the beginning of the breeding season until their chicks are independent,” says Cornell University’s All About Birds website. Willow ptarmigan aren’t often seen around Rankin Inlet in winter as they usually migrate south to the treeline but these four seemed content to spend Christmas in Kivalliq.
