Photo: Winnipeg zoo offers underwater polar bear viewing

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A young visitor to the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg can barely contain his awe, standing in a tunnel of glass and watching a polar bear swimming under water. Known as Nunavut's most fierce land predator, polar bears are also excellent swimmers. According to Canadian Geographic, they use their powerful front paws as oars and allow their rear paws to trail behind to act as rudders. They have been known to swim up to 10 kms per hour and for more than 90 kms without a rest. (PHOTO BY CLARE KINES)
