Valentine’s Day marks the end of smoking in and around Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, where people from Nunavut’s Kitikmeot region receive medical care. The Stanton Territorial Health Authority will take “a healthy step by making all of its buildings, properties, and grounds 100 per cent tobacco-free” Feb. 14, the health authority’s website says. The health authority also says that, at admission, staff will ask you if you smoke or use tobacco products and offer you nicotine replacement therapies such as the patch, gum, or an inhaler. About 60 per cent of Nunavummiut over the age of 12 are smokers. (PHOTO BY JANE GEORGE)
