Three crew members, the pilot, a coast guard officer, and a researcher, died Sept. 9 in the M’Clure Strait off the coast of Banks Island in the crash of their helicopter from the CCGS research icebreaker Amundsen. Here, the helicopter prepares to take off the Amundsen in 2010. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Sept. 10 that it has launched an investigation into the crash of the helicopter. “Laureen & I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic helicopter crash in Resolute Bay last night,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a statement sent out on Twitter. “On behalf of the GN, my thoughts & prayers are with all those affected by the tragic helicopter crash in the western Arctic,” said Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak in a tweet.
