Photo: Hundreds flock to hear ice vibrations in Iqaluit

About 600 Iqalungmiut were mesmerized by the unique ice music of internationally renowned Norwegian percussionist Terje Isungset during concerts at Joamie Elementary School on March 7 and 8. Isungset and his team had hewn instrument parts out of blocks of ice and assembled them on stage during a 30-minute intermission after local musicians, including the Iqaluit Fiddlers’ Club, opened the concert, i. The ice instruments ranged from xylophones and chimes to horns that, when blown by Isungset, sounded somewhere between the call of a sea mammal, an elephant’s trumpet and an extraterrestrial.
