Police find body of drowned man near Rankin Inlet

Police confirmed Sept. 14 they have found the body of a 43-year-old Rankin Inlet man who is thought to have drowned, an RCMP press release said.

On the evening of Sept. 12, members of the Rankin Inlet RCMP detachment were advised that the man was missing.

His family believed he had gone to tend to some fishing nets outside the community. Members of the local search and rescue team started a search.

On Sept. 13, divers found his body in the Diane River, about about 20 kilometres from Rankin Inlet.

Police, in consultation with the Chief Coroner of Nunavut, said the man appears to have suffered hypothermia and may have accidentally drowned.

RCMP did not release the man’s name, but CBC North radio has reported that the man is David Tattuinee and give his age as 44. Sept. 13 was his birthday, CBC reported.
