The Qikiqtani Inuit Association board of directors has appointed Larry Audlaluk of Grise Fiord to serve as interim vice-president, effective immediately, until an election is held in December to choose a permanent VP.

Audlaluk replaces George Eckalook, who resigned for personal reasons this past June.

“Mr. Audlaluk has shown great commitment to the QIA executive over the past decade and has served on many boards,” the QIA said in a Sept. 11 news release.

QIA’s by-law s. 4.03(g) states the board must appoint themselves to fill a vacancy when a position becomes vacant within the last remaining year of the term to be served.

The organization will hold a region-wide election in December 2013 to fill the job. Audlaluk’s appointment is effective until then, the QIA said.
