QIA election proceeds, Pangnirtung elects new community director
Peter Evvik elected to Qikiqtani Inuit Association position
About one in four eligible voters in Pangnirtung turned out April 7 to elect a new community director for the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.
Chief Returning Officer Nancy Karetak-Lindell declared Peter Evvik the winner of the election with 66 out of 228 votes cast.
The results were as follows:
• Leopa Akpalialuk, 48
• Manasa Evic, 31
• Peter Evvik, 66
• Hezakiah Oshutapik, 43
• Sakiasie Sowdlooapik, 38
Voter turnout was 25.45 per cent, an April 7 news release from the QIA said.
Thanks to the return of power in Pangnirtung, the QIA vote had been able to proceed as scheduled. That’s after the April 2 power-plant fire , which led to a local state of emergency in the community.
