An Umiujaq man has been charged with the second degree murder of a woman, Quebec police said Sept. 24.

Davidee (Qavik) Novalinga, 26, was formally charged this week in connection with the death of a 24-year old woman in the Nunavik community of about 450 people, the Sûreté du Québec provincial police force said.

Kativik Regional Police Force officers were called to a home around 8 a.m. Sept. 21, where they found the lifeless body of a 24-year-old Nellie Tookalook.

Member of the SQ’s major crimes unit flew in to Umiujaq this week to investigate the incident, later charging Novalinga with second degree murder.

Police would not provide other details about the events of Sept. 21, as Tookalook’s death remains under investigation.
