Quebec provincial police investigates death in Kangiqsujuaq

Few official details yet about Dec. 3 death

Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec provincial police force were in the the Hudson Strait community of Kangiqsujuaq Dec. 4 to investigate the death of a man that took place Dec. 3.

The investigators are continuing to look at the circumstances around the death of a 58-year-old man, said SQ spokesperson Pierre Tremblay.

A man was taken into custody.

Sammy Annahatak, 35, appeared in court Dec. 5 in Amos where he was charged with second-degree murder, Tremblay said Dec. 6.

Sources in the community, who did not wish to be named, say the deceased, 58-year-old Peter Jaaka, died from injuries he received during violent beating on Dec. 1, and that alcohol was involved.

Those local sources said Annahatak had recently been released from jail.
