The RCMP have laid nine criminal charges against a Cape Dorset man after a series of incidents in which a teenage girl was sexually assaulted and other people were threatened with a firearm.
Police arrested the man at a local residence shortly after they received multiple complaints about an intoxicated person who was pointing a gun at people.
A Cape Dorset resident who does not wish to be identified said the man was “thinking of going into a gambling house to steal the money but was not allowed in.”
After that, the man found a teenaged girl, threatened to shoot her if she refused to have sex with him, and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint, the Cape Dorset resident said.
A 27-year-old man faces nine charges:
• one count of sexual assault with a weapon;
• using a firearm in the commission of an offence;
• three counts of pointing a firearm;
• one count of careless use of a firearm;
• one count of resisting arrest;
• one count of unlawfully being in a dwelling house; and,
• once count of uttering threats.
The accused man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit Oct. 27.
