Recall on mini-subs distributed in Nunavut
Hygaard Mini Sub sandwiches may be contaminated with listeria

There’s a voluntary recall on Hygard mini-subs with this label due to possible contamination with a bacteria called listeria.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Hygaard Fine Foods EST 318 are warning people not to consume the Hygaard Mini Sub sandwiches because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The Hygaard Mini Sub sandwiches affected by this alert are sold in 130 gram packages bearing UPC 0 65504 49306 2 and a Best Before date “OCT 21.”
This product has been distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut and Yukon Territories.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product, an Oct. 13 news release said.
But food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled.
Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness.
Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
Hygaard Fine Foods of Alberta is voluntarily recalling the affected product, the news release said, while the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
