Sealing Network launches seal-hunting art competition

Entries should reflect “the social, cultural and economic importance of sealing in a creative way”

The Seal and Sealing Network wants you to show why sealing is important to you.

The network, which represents sealers across Canada, wants you to send an example of your best photography, poetry or artwork inspired by seal-hunting activities to the organization by email.

You can make a video or even write a song, says the network — as long as you submit your entry by June 1.

Prizes will be given for top entries which demonstrate “the social, cultural and economic importance of sealing in a creative way.”

Gil Thériault, the co-ordinator of the Seal and Sealing Network, said he plans to check entries to make sure that they’re not bogus entries submitted by anti-hunt activists.

“A small committee will then give prizes to the ones that are communicating the importance of the seal hunt in their community in the most creative way,” he told Nunatsiaq News.

The prizes include a pair of sealskin boots to the first-prize winner, a sealskin hat to the second-prize winner and a pair of sealskin mittens to the third-prize winner.
