Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. reports that search and rescue operations are continuing May 16 for a missing worker, now identified as Michel Pilon, 39, of Timmons, Ont., at its Meliadine gold mine project near Rankin Inlet.

Search efforts to find Pilon, first reported missing early May 14, were suspended overnight as blizzard conditions with zero visibility continued in the Kivalliq region, said an update from the company.

Search teams resumed their activities May 16.

Meanwhile, Agnico Eagle is also sending emergency response personnel from its Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake to assist in the search effort.

The company said a helicopter remains on standby at the Meliadine camp to assist with the search and will be deployed as soon as weather conditions are determined to be safe for flying.

Environment Canada says the blizzard in Rankin Inlet will abate around noon.

Pilon, an employee of Boart Longyear, was reported missing May 14 after failing to arrive at his drill rig located approximately three kilometres southwest of the Meliadine camp.

The drill worker was reported missing in the morning at about 7 a.m. after he failed to reach a drill site. Pilon and three co-workers were travelling to during a change of shift.

Agnico Eagle’s Emergency Response team is coordinating search efforts with Boart Longyear, the RCMP and community members.

The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission has also been notified of the incident, Agnico Eagle said.
