The search for Johnny Kaosoni of Cambridge Bay has ended.

A hunter found his frozen body on April 9 at about 2:40 p.m. approximately 88 kilometres south of Cambridge Bay, RCMP Sgt. Greg Sutherland confirmed April 10.

Sutherland said there was “no evidence of foul play.”

Search and rescue teams from Cambridge Bay, along with aircraft, had spent days combing the area between Victoria Island and the mainland, without success.

Kaosoni, in his early 40s, went missing March 31 after he left a cabin located about 50 kilometres southwest of Cambridge Bay on the mainland.

Kaosoni left the cabin on his snowmobile, dressed for cold weather conditions, with warm snow pants and a parka.

On April 1, his family notified the RCMP in Cambridge Bay that he had not returned home, police said in an April 5 news release.

Kaosoni leaves his common-law wife, Donna Evaglok, four sons, and two daughters, as well as eight siblings and numerous other family members and friends in Cambridge Bay and the Kitikmeot region.
