People in the High Arctic community of Resolute Bay spent the afternoon of Aug. 13 indoors, the RCMP said Aug. 17 in a news release.

At about 12:40 p.m. on Aug. 13, members of the Resolute Bay RCMP detachment responded to a report of a firearm being discharged within the community of about 220 people.

Police and the hamlet officials urged residents to remain indoors, until the situation was resolved at about 3:00 p.m., the RCMP said in the release.

A 38-year-old man was located and arrested without further incident, the RCMP said.

The man faces charges of discharging a firearm with intent and breach of undertaking.

The RCMP said the man was taken into remand and will appear in court Aug. 25.

In the release, members of the RCMP detachment in Resolute Bay wanted to “thank the community members for their patience and appreciate the actions they took to assist in resolving the incident.”
