Tory budget reflects “better understanding of Nunavut’s unique challenges:” Aariak

Nunavut gave a thumbs-up to the 2013-14 federal budget, announced March 21 by federal finance minister Jim Flaherty in Ottawa.

Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak and Finance Minister Keith Peterson said in a March 21 statement that they “welcomed” the budget, which included $100 million for new social housing construction.

They mentioned the renewal of the federal commitment to build infrastructure across Canada, as well as money to build “urgently needed” social housing.

“My cabinet and I have worked together with our Member of Parliament [Leona Aglukkaq] to ensure that decision-makers in Ottawa have a better understanding of Nunavut’s unique challenges,” Aariak said.

“I am pleased the federal government has heard our calls for essential investments to address our ongoing and serious housing shortfall.”

Peterson said the renewal of the Building Canada program and the improvement of the gas tax fund will provide “much needed additional funding support to municipalities.”

“Given the major infrastructure challenges faced by Nunavut communities, this is welcome news,” he said.

“The federal budget also confirms the renewal of transfers to Nunavut and ensures that our government has a solid revenue foundation. Our government’s continued prudent fiscal management will ensure that we can meet our target plan to remain in balance for the coming years.”
