This November, you’ll start seeing the last two bank notes in the Bank of Canada’s new polymer series: new $10 and $5 bills.
They follow the introduction earlier of polymer bills in the $100, $50 and $20 denominations.
Like the previous three bills, the new $10 and $5 bank notes contain features designed to deter counterfeiters.
Those features, not found on older paper notes, include raised ink, a transparent window, an image that changes colour depending on how it’s held and small numbers printed in reverse.
The polymer bank notes are likely to last two and half times longer than paper bills, cutting down on replacement costs, the Bank of Canada said.
The $10 note features a portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister, on one side and a representation of the “Canadian” train, the legendary passenger service that once ran on Canadian Pacific Railway rails laid across the southern prairies and through the Rocky Mountains.
The $5 bill features a new representation of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who served as prime minister from 1896 to 1911.
On the other side, it shows the Canadarm2 and Dextre, two Canadian-made robotics units used on the International Space Station.
