WWF: Patterson’s allegations “unfounded and misleading”

“Our objectives explicitly recognize and provide for economic development”

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

In “‘Foreign money’ threatens Canadian sovereignty, Nunavut senator says,” Senator Dennis Patterson’s allegations about the nefarious motivations of groups such as World Wildlife Fund are both unfounded and misleading.

WWF’s work in the Canadian Arctic is undertaken in consultation and partnership with government agencies, Inuit organizations, and local communities, in order to help ensure sustainable stewardship of Arctic lands and waters.

Our objectives explicitly recognize and provide for economic development, carried out in a responsible way, and with net benefit to the affected communities.

The challenges faced in the Canadian Arctic are the result of global activities and of global interest, and WWF is proud to work to address these issues as part of a global network.

Our efforts – which, as a not-for-profit, are highly regulated and very transparent – are driven by science, informed by local knowledge, and working toward the best future for the Arctic.

Director, Arctic Program, WWF-Canada
