Elders may want to bring earplugs, but young rock fans in Iqaluit ought to enjoy an upcoming concert courtesy of Alianait and the Embrace Life Council.

Speed Control, a talented young trio of musicians from the Yukon, equally comfortable playing piano ballads and blistering rock, are heading to Iqaluit Sept. 10 to play a 7:30 p.m. show at Inuksuk High School to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day.

Their website streams a half dozen songs including a cover of Nirvana’s “Breed,” which sounds less grunge and more punk than Nirvana’s version.

Heavy on guitar and bass, but melodic and rhythmically driven, it’s not the kind of live music heard often in Iqaluit but it’s sure to please the denim-and-sneakers crowd looking for a sweaty, fist-pumping, heart-thumping show.

The band will also offer two musical workshops while they’re in town.

Opening the show is Iqaluit’s popular new dance troupe Kasuktaqtiit.

Tickets for the show are $22 in advance, $12 for youth 13-18, or $25 at the door ($15 for youth). You can purchase tickets at Arctic Ventures Marketplace or through the Alianait website. All Alianait shows are free for elders and children, 12 and under, accompanied by an adult.
