A little sand can make icy steps safer

Here is an idea that I would like to share with others who live in the north regarding preparations for the upcoming winter.

It is something I first saw done in Labrador and since then in other places as well.

The caretakers of public buildings bring some sand inside before the ground begins to freeze. Regular sand that we see on a beach or spread around houses is suitable.

It is kept in a box or sacks to be used during the winter to sprinkle on icy doorsteps and ramps. It costs nothing, except a bit of planning, and unlike commercial de-icing products, sand does not cause things to rust, mess with the environment or ruin footwear made from the skins of animals.

Not only does this prevent the elderly from slipping down — even the fittest people can be taken by surprise if they step on a doorstep that is icy.
