Cell phone service arrives in Kugluktuk

Northern store acts as local dealer for Northwestel

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Cell phones and Blackberries have arrived in Kugluktuk with the arrival of Northwestel’s Latitude wireless network.

Service subscribers may text-message, send emails, photos, and video messages, while a mobile Internet browser service provides access to music downloads, screensavers, games and personal ring-tones.

The new service, provided by Northwestel, uses the CDMA platform, which means it’s compatible with Bell, Telus, Aliant, SaskTel and MTS service in Canada so users will be able to roam anywhere other CDMA networks exist.

Kugluktuk is the fifth Nunavut community, after Arviat, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay and Rankin Inlet, to become connected to Northwestel’s wireless network.

Northern Stores will serve as Northwestel’s cellular dealer in Kugluktuk.
