Leading up to Nunavut’s Oct. 23 municipal elections, Nunatsiaq News is publishing snapshots of races in the territory’s 25 communities.
In Arviat, voters have nine candidates to choose from in a race to fill eight seats on its municipal council.
This is the only contest residents will have a voice in for the community which, with about 2,800 residents, is the third most populated in Nunavut.
Joe Savikataaq Jr. will return as mayor. He won by acclamation after being the only candidate to enter the race.
The council candidates are Mike Gibbons, Gordy Kidlapik, Alex Ishalook, Jimmy Main, Jason Gibbons, David Kuksuk, Darren Price, Nathan Caskey and Gleason Uppahuak.
Nunatsiaq News put a call out on social media inviting candidates to share details about their platform but nobody responded.
Two candidates were acclaimed to the district education authority: Jacqueline Otuk and Jackie Williams.
