Tory crime bill will hurt Nunavut
The Conservative government is proposing new plans to get tough on crime, with Bill C-25.
Their idea is to jail more people longer by imposing mandatory minimum sentences, ending house arrest and giving less credit for time-served while waiting in remand.
One can only imagine what this kind of policy will look like in the North.
Crime in Nunavut is almost always the result of booze-fueled rage or stupidity. If the Conservatives have their way, the root cause of crime — in this case, alcohol and the many reasons people have for abusing it — will continue to be ignored, and many more people will be shipped to the South to serve time in new jails.
You can do something about this.
Write to your Conservative MP, Leona Aglukkaq, to ask for more rehab programs, no mandatory minimums and less American-style lock-em-up politics.
