About 70 Iqaluit residents joined hands and formed a circle around the Tukisigiarvik building March 15 to protest the federal government’s discontinuation of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, which for the past six years has provided Tukisigiarvik with most of its funding. Organizers said, however, that they will continue to operate the centre with a reduced budget and that they’re hopeful about replacing the federal government’s contributions by patching together applications to a variety of other grant programs. The Qikiqtani Inuit Association, which helped organized the event, said people in Clyde River and Pangnirtung held similar events March 15 to protest the cessation of federal money for the Ilisaqsivik Society and the Pujualussait Centre.
