Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak announced Dec. 13 that as of Jan. 11, 2011, Joe Adla Kunuk will hold the top political job in her office: principal secretary and chief of staff.

Kunuk succeeds Bruce Rigby, who announced this past fall that he will retire from the public service by the end of the calendar year.

Throughout his long career as a public servant and elected official, Kunuk has held numerous senior posts: mayor of Iqaluit, executive member of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, member of the Iqaluit Education Council, and deputy minister with the Government of Nunavut and the Office of the Interim Commissioner.

Kunuk’s most recent senior job was chief executive officer for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

“As we move forward with the implementation of Tamapta [the GN’s mandate document], Mr. Kunuk will be able to draw on a wide range of experiences to help us succeed,” Aariak said in a news release.
