Iqaluit RCMP lay charges in post office incident
Man, 51, charged with uttering death threats, firearms offences
The Iqaluit RCMP have laid four charges against an Iqaluit man following an early morning incident March 3 near the post office.
At around 7:15 a.m. March 3, police were called to the area around the post office and the office-apartment building in which the post office is located, an RCMP press release said.
There, they found a distraught man who “appeared to be upset” and was holding a rifle.
Police and bylaw officers then blocked off the area. At about 8:50 a.m., police arrested the man, who had dropped the rifle.
Joshie Mitsima, 51, faces four charges: uttering death threats; unsafe storage of a firearm; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and possessing a concealed weapon.
After appearing before a justice of the peace for a bail hearing, Mitsima was released from custody under strict conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in court April 8 at 9:30 p.m. in Iqaluit.
