New Kivalliq freight service to operate through Churchill
Firm aims to ease Winnipeg-Kivalliq cargo shipments
A new shipping service promises faster and more flexible cargo service to the Kivalliq region via the Port of Churchill.
The service, a joint venture between the Hudson Bay Port Co. and Yellowknife’s Braden Burry Expediting, will see cargo come up from BBE’s Winnipeg warehouse by truck.
In Thompson or The Pas, freight will be moved onto trains and hauled to Churchill where it will get loaded onto barges or ships and delivered to Kivalliq communities.
U.S. rail giant OmniTRAX, which owns the port and the railway that connects Churchill to the south, has been eying Nunavut as a way to boost business on both the rail line and port.
