Nunavut police defuse nine-hour armed stand-off in Cape Dorset
Distraught 20-year-old man threatened suicide
A 20-year-old man has been arrested following a nine-hour standoff on June 23 with the RCMP’s emergency response team, police said in a press release issued June 24.
Cape Dorset RCMP received a call at around 1:00 p.m. June 23 reporting that a man was sitting on the front steps of a home with a rifle that he was pointing at himself.
An RCMP charter then flew an emergency response team from Iqaluit to Cape Dorset.
After a nine-hour standoff, the man put his gun down and surrendered without injuring himself or anyone else.
Police are not releasing the man’s name until charges are laid, but say that he has been seen by mental health workers in Iqaluit and Cape Dorset.
The RCMP press release says weapons-related charges are expected.
